Crematorium in Oporto

We were asked to install a crematorium in the Church of Lapa, Oporto, Portugal. The project proposed two mourning rooms, modern spaces with air conditioning and a modern crematorium. As architects, we safeguard the accessibility by ramps and lifts. The Lapa Church was somewhat embraced by this new equipment. New modern and minimalist spaces generate a strong silence that allow the meditation.

Renovate and alter existing historic buildings

This project requires building something new in a context of protected architectural heritage. We like this dialogue between several centuries. It is important to use the heritage we receive in a useful way and project the future with this confrontation between the different architectures that make up our cities. Only in this way can we protect heritage from degradation and abandonment. At the same time, we are contributing to the existence of a heritage of modern architecture in our urban landscapes.
